What Is A Brachioplasty?
Do you feel as though you simply cannot achieve toned arms even with regular exercise? An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, removes excess skin on the upper arms to create more tone and definition. Do you want to reshape your arms, creating smoother, more natural contours and a more fit appearance? The brachioplasty procedure is particularly popular among those people who have lost a significant amount of weight.
It’s natural to want to show off your new physique after weight loss, but sagging skin in your upper arm area can make wearing sleeveless shirts embarrassing. Brachioplasty can provide you with a more proportionate appearance, making you feel more svelte and comfortable in your clothes and improving your confidence and self-esteem as well.
Benefits of a Brachioplasty
Have you lost weight, but still have “bat wings” when you lift and extend your arms to the sides? The upper arm often does not respond well to weight-training exercises, leaving people with flapping skin that they would rather cover up. Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and contours the undersides of your upper arms by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the underlying supportive tissue, which restores the natural contours of your upper arms. Are you an adult who has significant laxity in the skin of your upper arms due to the aging process? Any individual who is not significantly overweight, but who has a significant amount of excess skin on the upper arm may be a good candidate for brachioplasty, as this excess skin is typically the result of drastic weight loss or the aging process.
Who Is The Ideal Candidate For A Brachioplasty?
The area between your underarm and your elbow is a problem for many people as they age. Weight loss or the natural aging process can lead to loose, sagging skin that droops, resembling “bat wings.” Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to tone or tighten the area, no matter how much time you spend in the gym. An arm lift or brachioplasty is a surgical body contouring procedure designed to treat sagging skin and loose tissue on the upper arm. The result is firmer, smaller upper arms. Ideal candidates for a brachioplasty are at or near their ideal weight and are in overall good health.
What Do I Need To Do Before A Brachioplasty?
Just like any other surgery, it’s important to make preparations, including preparing your home for your recovery period, arranging for assistance in the first 24 to 48 hours after your procedure, and doing the following pre-operative preparations:
- Have an overall health check-up
- Complete necessary blood work
- Discontinue use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain vitamins and other supplements two weeks prior to your procedure
- Cease smoking two weeks prior to your procedure and two weeks after
- Alter, adjust or discontinue your current daily medications temporarily based on Dr. Zamora’s recommendation

IN OUR CLIENTS' OWN WORDS
What Should I Expect On The Day Of My Brachioplasty?
Arm lifts are usually performed under general anesthesia. The arms are numbed for the procedure, and you will feel no pain. Dr. Zamora will start the operation with an incision, typically placed on the inner arm and extending the length of the upper arm. The size and placement of the incisions will depend upon the location of the loose skin and fat. He will then remove excess skin and pockets of fat, and in some instances, he may deploy liposuction to address stubborn deposits of fat. In this way, the supportive tissues beneath your skin will be tightened and reshaped using internal sutures. Once this is complete, your skin will be pulled taut so that it conforms to your arm’s new contours. Finally, as the remaining skin is brought together your incision is sutured closed. A compression garment will be applied to reduce swelling in addition to supporting the tissues during the healing process
How Long Does It Take To Perform A Brachioplasty?
The time needed for this procedure is highly individualized but is usually about two to three hours.
What To Expect After A Brachioplasty?
Once your brachioplasty surgery is completed, you will generally experience some minor pain and swelling. Following your arm lift, your arms will be wrapped in a sterile surgical dressing and compression garments, which should be worn for several weeks. Many patients are able to return to work about 7 to 10 days after their arm lift, but your individual recovery period will depend upon the extent of your procedure. You can expect a certain amount of swelling and some discomfort, and Dr. Zamora will give you instructions on how to care for your arms at home as they heal. You will also be advised to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a period of time, usually a few weeks.
Will I Have Scars After Getting A Brachioplasty?
The remaining scar from your brachioplasty will depend on several factors, including the amount of tissue that needed to be removed during your brachioplasty, the laxity of your skin, and your individual healing process. Dr. Zamora will review your incision options with you, but despite placing incisions in the most inconspicuous locations possible, some patients are left with a significant scar, but even those patients usually feel the trade off to attain truly sculpted and more youthful-looking arms is more than well worth it.
When Will I See The Results?
Although initial improvements will be visible immediately, the full results of an arm lift will be seen in about three months, once your residual swelling has subsided. As your recovery progresses and your post-operative swelling diminishes you will begin to see the results of your brachioplasty.
What Are Possible Complications Of A Brachioplasty?
During your brachioplasty consultation with Dr. Zamora, the procedure will be explained in detail, as Dr. Zamora takes all the time necessary to find out about your goals for the surgery, in addition to discussing any possible complications of your brachioplasty procedure.
How Long Will The Results Of A Brachioplasty Last?
Your results of your brachioplasty treatment are long lasting, as sagging tissue in your arms is permanently removed, provided you continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
